Roadbook Symbols Explained: Tulip, Hourglass & Co.

The tulip is the best-known symbol in the roadbook. It indicates a turn at a junction – drawn schematically like a stylised flower. The stem shows the approach direction, the bloom the possible exits, a dot or arrow marks the direction to take.

The hourglass symbolises a 180-degree U-turn. You drive in one direction, turn completely and head back. Often found at dead ends or tight turning points. Be sure to note the distance figure afterwards.

The sharp hairpin denotes a very tight turn, narrower than 90 degrees – almost a hairpin bend. In German rally jargon it is playfully called the Baumaffe. Reduce speed and look ahead.

The complex junction describes a confusing intersection with many branches whose geometry cannot easily be drawn as a tulip. Reduce speed, take in the junction, read the instruction carefully.

Roundabouts are drawn as a circle with an entry and exit. The exit to take is usually numbered or marked with an arrow. The first exit immediately after the entry counts as number one – count carefully, especially with several exits close together.
