Reading the Roadbook
Reading the roadbook made easy: from the first symbol to a full stage. With practical exercises and pro tips for beginners and beyond.

The roadbook is the heart of every regularity rally – and whoever can read it has a clear advantage. But what do all those symbols, arrows and strange drawings mean? This guide explains the most important roadbook symbols clearly and concisely.
The sharp hairpin denotes a very tight turn, narrower than 90 degrees – almost a hairpin bend. In German rally jargon it is playfully called the Baumaffe. Reduce speed and look ahead.
The complex junction describes a confusing intersection with many branches whose geometry cannot easily be drawn as a tulip. Reduce speed, take in the junction, read the instruction carefully.
Practice makes perfect: get hold of an old roadbook from a rally already driven and read it on a route you know. That way you learn the symbols stress-free.
Besides the symbols, every roadbook line contains numbers: the partial distance to the next instruction and the total distance since the start of the stage. You continually match these values with your tripmeter. If your odometer deviates from the roadbook, it can be down to tyre size, tyre pressure or driving style – recalibrate it before every rally.
Nobody reads a roadbook flawlessly straight away. Start with old roadbooks on familiar routes, ride along as co-driver with experienced crews and use the introductory courses many clubs offer. With every rally you become more confident, and after just a few events the tulip, hourglass and co. become second nature.
