Baumaffe

German term for a silent control: a letter or number combination, usually fixed to trees or lampposts, that the crew must record on the control card.

A Baumaffe is a silent control (stumme Kontrolle) used on orientation runs and classic-car tours. It is a combination of letters or numbers, usually mounted on trees, lampposts or posts – hence the playful German name (literally 'tree monkey'). The navigator must spot the markers and write them onto the control card (Bordkarte) in the order they are passed. They prove that the prescribed route was actually driven in the correct sequence, without needing a marshal on site.
