The Right Equipment for the Regularity Rally

What the navigator works with

The right equipment makes navigating easier and more precise. While you can get by with the bare essentials for your first start, investing in better tools pays off as your experience grows. Here is an overview of the most important aids.

Tripmeter and trip computer

A tripmeter measures the distance travelled more precisely than the standard odometer. High-end rally trip computers additionally calculate average speeds and target-versus-actual deviations in real time. These devices are the heart of ambitious navigation.

Timing

At least one reliable stopwatch is a must. Many crews use two devices for safety. What matters is a clearly readable display and simple operation – in the hectic rally routine every second counts.

Beginner recommendation: start with a good stopwatch and a sturdy clipboard. You can get the expensive trip computer once you're sure the sport will keep you hooked long-term.

Mounts and lighting

Often underestimated but crucial: good mounts for stopwatches and trip computer. Everything must be comfortably within reach and readable for the navigator. For night drives or early starts at dawn, suitable interior lighting is important that illuminates the roadbook without dazzling the driver. A small clip lamp or a reading light does the job well here.

Pens, markers and odds and ends

The often-forgotten basics include pens and coloured markers for notes and highlighting, a sturdy clipboard, spare batteries for all devices and a small notebook. These little things cost little but make a big difference in the rally routine. Keep them ready to hand in a dedicated bag so you don't have to search in the heat of the moment.

Upgrading as experience grows

The equipment grows with your demands. What begins as a simple basic set can develop over the years into a professional setup. Many crews only invest in a precise trip computer after several events. Listen to experienced participants and test different devices before committing – not every expensive purchase suits every driving style.

Care and maintenance of the equipment

Even the best equipment needs care. Replace batteries in good time and store sensitive devices dry and protected. A faulty stopwatch in the middle of a special stage can ruin a whole weekend – regular checks before every rally prevent such annoyances.
