Veteran vehicle

The official Swiss term for a vehicle first registered more than 30 years ago. The status is entered in the registration document and brings registration advantages.

Veteran vehicle (German Veteranenfahrzeug) is the legally defined Swiss term for a historic vehicle. It is governed by the Swiss federal roads office (ASTRA) 'Directives for veteran vehicles' of 2008: the vehicle must have been first registered more than 30 years ago, correspond to its original specification, be in impeccable optical and technical condition and be used only privately and not regularly. The road-traffic office enters the status in the registration document (Code 180). This brings benefits: re-inspection is required only every six years, and an interchangeable plate may be issued for more than two veteran vehicles. A FIVA ID-Card may be required as proof of originality. Unlike the colloquial 'Oldtimer', veteran status is an official entry.
